The inaugural Best of the 757 is a celebration of high school athletes from Hampton Roads. The one-week long event during the last week of July will showcase the amazing athleticism of the area's athletes and to see who might be tomorrow's next great athlete of the 757. Each day, Hampton Roads' area high school boys and girls' athletes in each of the major sports (Football, Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Basketball) will compete individually and as a team in a regional Nike/SPARQ combine.

Another successful event is behind us at Boo Williams Sportsplex. T. Jackson Elite defeated Boo Williams Summer League team last night, 54-49, to win the 16-and-under title game. Boo Williams Summer League 15-and-under team beat All Ohio 62-45. Hundereds of fans turned out to watch the games and check out our new facility. Read all about it, here. Boo Williams Sportsplex is pleased to host the "Battle of the Best" girl's basketball tournament beginning tomorrow, April 18 and running through Sunday, April 20. For those coaches, athletes and families involved in the tournament and looking for information about game schedules, rules, maps showing all 26 locations or additional information, please visit the "Battle of the Best" website. Information for college coaches can also be found there.
Admission prices are as follows:
$15/day for adults; $25 for the weekend
$12/day for students (7-17); $20 for the weekend
Children 6 and under are free

Wow, what a weekend. The Nike Boo Williams Spring Invitational wrapped up yesterday with the Boo Williams Summer League team posting a 77-69 win over Athletes First of Oklahoma City. Thousands of people came to the facility from all over the country, by far our largest crowd to date. Jim Halley from USA Today was here, live-blogging. The Virginian-Pilot came out to interview some folks as did The Daily Press. Please be sure to read their detailed takes on all the excitement that took place this past weekend. The consensus seemed to be that the Sportsplex is big as an airplane hangar! We appreciate all the hard work that went in to making the tournament a success and look forward to hosting the Battle of the Best Girl's tournament next weekend!

Focus on Sports professional photographers will be at each event taking pictures of athletes in action. Individual and team photos are available for purchase. I want to highlight a group that will be using our facility for various purposes this year. Girls, Inc. of the Greater Peninsula is the local chapter of the national organization, Girls, Inc., whose mission is to inspire young women to be SMART, STRONG and BOLD. Girls, ages 6-18, participate in programs that help build their athletic and competitive spirit, stimulate their interest in math, science and technology, and build and maintain their self-confidence. Throughout my career, I have come across a lot of students and parents who have questions about how to go about getting an athletic scholarship for college. The first thing I tell them is that it’s best to prepare early, both academically and athletically. Freshman year is the start for NCAA eligibility rules. I can’t stress enough that you first have to qualify academically to play. Coaches are generally looking for a student to have a solid academic footing, good character and good skills. If you aren’t being actively recruited, talk to your coach and your parents and remember not to focus solely on Division I schools. More kids go to Division II and III schools than Division I. Study hard and play hard. That’s your best bet.
